Take care of your teeth!

Take care of your teeth!

Some of the best advice I was ever given (by my mother, of course) was to always say please and thank you, keep my ears clean and brush my teeth twice a day. This is the kind of practical advice that is as valuable as it is simple, and I’ve always treated it like a commandment from the heavens, as if, so long as my teeth were OK and I was polite, I’d go far.

Now, maybe that’s a bit optimistic, but have you ever seen a confident and successful person with terrible teeth? I rest my case. Whether preparing for a job interview or a date, a good set of teeth can go quite a way toward calming your jitters and breaking the ice.

The fact of the matter is, maintaining a good level of oral hygiene is not challenging, and you’ll be rewarded with a dazzling smile and trips to the dentist lasting no more than a few minutes and ending in a congratulatory “see you in six months” rather than the requirement for a dental job along the lines of tooth extraction.

Brushing in the morning and evening removes dental plaque, which contains a whole host of acid secreting bacteria that can eat away at your teeth’s enamel coating, and causes gingivitis, halitosis, cavities and gum disease. A staggering thirty per-cent of adult tooth loss is caused by preventable gum disease. Something to bear in mind on those nights where it’s tempting to “forget” to take a trip to the sink.

The range of tools at your disposal in your fight against cavities is vast. Simple old fashioned manual toothbrushes and toothpaste will do the job,but you might be tempted by the ever increasing range of electronic gizmos, beautiful oscillating, chargeable contraptions that look as if they were dreamed up by NASA. Flossing, tongue scraping, mouth wash and chewing sugar free gum all play their part as well, but most Birmingham dentists will tell you that the good old fashioned brush is adequate, if adhered to religiously, and used as part of a good dental health regime including bi-annual check-ups at the dentist.
