An Overview Of Braces For Teeth

Brief History of Braces
It will be difficult if not impossible to believe that dental braces can be traced back to very ancient times and the very first set of braces for teeth was said to have been used long before the time of Jesus Christ. J J Guildford has first published an orthodontics text book in the 1800s! Then metals like Gold, platinum, silver, steel, rubber and occasionally wood, ivory, zinc, copper and brass were used to form wires and hooks but they were all restricted to the wealthy in Society!

Uses of Braces
Braces for teeth are sought after by people for different reasons. Some require them for straightening the misaligned teeth, while others want to rectify an overtime or fix an under bite. Some others want them for purely cosmetic reasons, while a few want for dental health reasons also. Basically they are designed to align and straighten teeth. They are used to correct appearance problems, speech difficulties, diseased gums, jaw disorders, occlusion, and teeth with space or crooked in appearance. Though they were popular among youngsters, nowadays, people of all ages have started wearing braces.

Components of the Brace
There are four components in a brace – the wire, the O –ring brackets, and a metal band. The arch wire is a thin metal wire running across the teeth through each bracket. Bracket is bonded to the wire by an O-ring. Each tooth will have a bracket attached to an O-ring with a metal bond. This contraption pushes the teeth into the desired place from the persistent pressure of the arch wire. Depending upon the individual’s metabolism, it may take several months to even years for the braces to align the teeth properly back in their proper place.

Types of Braces
Basically there are four main types of braces prevalent, which are traditional metal, Invisalign, lingual and clear ceramic. What a patient gets is entirely dependent on his capacity and ability to pay and to which he qualifies, if he is insured. As far as long term reliability and cost effectiveness is concerned, traditional metal braces are the favorites as per dentists.

Metal Braces – By far the most popular among the teenagers due to the popularity among their peers, metal braces are the competitive ones also and hence favorites of their parents. But wealthy among them do go for costlier versions.

Invisalign Braces – Among wealthy adults, this Invisalign brace option is quite popular, as they are invisible to others. They can be removed with ease while teeth cleaning and eating. In terms of comfort, they are the numero uno among all the types. Correspondingly its cost is also quite high. But there is one rider; orthodontist will not recommend this for patients with severe oral conditions.

Lingual Braces – Because of their strategic location behind the teeth, they are wholly invisible, but slightly uncomfortable for the tongue maneuvers. They are slightly more costly than metal braces and difficult to maintain.

Ceramic Braces – As they are of identical color as natural teeth, they are almost invisible to the naked eye. As they are weaker than the metal braces, intensive and deeper care has to be taken for them. They are costlier than their metal counterparts also.
