(IRCs).
The next chat is
Should a Privacy Law Restrict the Press?
on
Wednesday 10 September 1997 at 20:00 BST
(19:00 GMT)
In the early hours of Sunday 31 August, celebrity royal Princess Diana was
killed, along with her lover Dodi Fayed, in a car crash in Paris. The
accident followed a high speed chase by the Paparazzi, keen to get the
latest shot of the couple together.
In spite of evidence that the driver of their car was well over the alcohol
limit, many have pointed the finger at the press as bearing much of the
responsibility for the accident.
- Should there be restrictions on press freedom in the name of privacy?
- Do public figures like royalty have a right to their privacy?
- Should such privacy be protected with new legislation?
We are delighted to have Tessa Mayes from the London International Research
Exchange as guest speaker. Tessa is research co-ordinator of the "Freedom
and Privacy Project" at the LIRE media group. The discussion will be
chaired by Chris Ellison (Internet Freedom).
